Pine needles are so tactile. One of my favourite experiences in the woods is gliding my hand over a branch of needles. They are so cool and smooth to the touch. The sound the pines make when the wind blows through is what makes all the troubles me melt away. The pines save energy in the spring by keeping their foliage over the winter. This can be to their detriment as the weight of snow can take down branches. But the forest floor is quite happy to have the nourishment of decomposing bark and needles. And what a lovely shelter for the small birds and animals who are also resilient enough to survive a Canadian winter.
